For generations, assessment and its focus on standards and accountability have controlled the public discourse regarding the improvement of education. Discussion about balancing achievement within the curriculum, making the goals of the individualized education programs (IEP) compatible with high standards, and determining what constitutes a thoughtfully directed curricular focus are common. These concern focus attention on the performance and progress of all learners. Assessment drives instruction, but assessments often lack the primary goal of guiding instructional decisions. However, traditional means of assessment do not typically reflect their understanding of science content. We found through classroom observation and analysis of student products while ELL students have difficulty writing assignments. This mismatch between assessment prices and student understanding is what motivated us as teacher researchers to assess fourth and fifth grade understanding of marine environments through drawings. We co taught science and mathematics to a multiage class of third, fourth, and fifth grade elementary students, 60% of which identified themselves as Latino and limited English proficiency.
