Hegel Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel grew up in the Romantic era. After studying theology at a young age he began to work with Schelling at universities. By the time Hegel died in 1831, he had, “united and developed almost all the ideas that had surfaced in the Romantic period” (Gaarder 357). Hegel took the idea of world spirit as all the human utterances in life, thought, and culture. Hegel also argued against Immanuel Kant’s belief in an unattainable truth. Hegel felt truth is subjective, “thus rejecting the existence of any truth above or beyond reason” (Gaarder 358). The observation of history was Hegel’s philosophy. He believed that no philosophy was wrong but it was right for its time and as the time progresses and humans increase in …show more content…
“Sartre said that, ‘existentialism is humanism’” (Gaarder 450). He was an atheist who believed that because, “Man is the only living creature that is conscious of its own existence” (Gaarder 450), their "being" is therefore different from that of other things that are alive. Sartre thought that there is no general human nature but rather that we must create our own and that philosophers have always been trying to find what our human nature is while there never was one rather human nature is formed through what the self decides for its life. Sartre described our freedom as a burden and a curse, since we arrive in the world free because he has not created himself. We must assume complete responsibility for our actions and find our own meaning in life through the use of our consciousness. Simone de Beauvoir, Sartre's companion, argued further that male and female natures do not …show more content…
“The universe is inconceivably huge” (Gaarder 498). The theory claims that the universe is still growing as a result of the Big Bang. This was caused when, “about fifteen billion years ago, all the substance in the universe was assembled in a relatively small are. The substance was so dense that gravity made it terrifically hot. Finally it got so hot and so tightly packed that it exploded” (Gaarder 501). That was how the universe was born and it still grows expanding continuously until maybe it will return back into that dense substance and repeat the event. This possibility poses the question if the Big Bang has already been repeated several times. The size of the universe produces more questions for us such as whether we are the only living planet in the entire universe, or is there other life pointing at Earth with their telescopes and looking maybe a few years back or millions of years back, “If he was lucky, he’d see a few flat-faced Neanderthals” (Gaarder
