The Big Bang Theory

Humans have often wondered how the universe developed into what it is today. For centuries, it has induced religious and scientific discussions and debates, leading famous scientists to trying to discover the enigma which the development of the universe is. One of the most accepted model to represent the evolution of the universe is the big bang theory. “It is an attempt to explain how the universe developed from a very tiny, dense state into what it is today” (Strickland, 2008). The big bang theory was proposed by Belgian priest, Georges Lemaître in 1927. He hypothesized that the universe began from a single primordial atom, as is shown by the main circle on the diagram to the left. His model of the big bang is based on two assumptions. …show more content…

Furthermore, research conducted proved that the amount of elements in the universe correspond to the proportions expected the Big Bang occured. Thus, supporting the model. However, the model disregards the rule that nothing is able to travel faster than the speed of light. This is because, in the early inflationary period of the big bang, it was expanding in a times of a fraction of a second. Moreover, it violates the first law of thermodynamics, which states that matter or energy cannot be created or destroyed. The big bang does not explain why it took place, nor how the universe was created. However, it can be argued that the big bang theory addresses the evolution of the universe, not its creation. The big bang is simply a theory. This means, that it cannot be proven, but it can be disproven. Observations and tests carried out which support the theory have made it stronger, resulting in more people willing to accept it. However, it could all be false and if new evidence is found which contradicts the theory, it must be discarded or revised. In addition, it is unknown in what the universe is being created it. The universe may be expanding within some other structure, it may not be. However, it is impossible to know since anything that lies outside the boundaries of the universe cannot be observed. This is because, it can be considered that the theory goes against religion. It allows the the origin of the universe to be followed back to natural aspects. Consequently, there is no need for a god, contradicting the bible. Moreover, the theory proves that Earth does not have a special place in the universe and that God did not choose to create this world at a specific location. Furthermore, an intriguing fact is that a catholic priest chose to go beyond the usual accepted concept of the creation of the universe as well as his own christian values and challenged the beliefs which many held as to how the universe developed into how it is known today. Moreover, today, the pope supports the belief “in a supernatural God who is responsible for the existence of the universe, while our science tells us how he did it" (Pope Francis, 2017). Thus, proving that there could be a connection between god and the big bang theory. The church supports the belief that as long as Catholics believe that humans were created by god and not due to natural attributes, there should not be a collision between the Catholic principles and the big bang
