Introduction Immanuel Kant was a German Philosopher in the late 18th century, known for his work the Critique of Pure Reason. He broke through and changed the view of modern philosophy, joining two established ideas rationalism and empiricism into a model of the subjective origin of the fundamental principles of both science and morality, developing an opening for philosophy in the eighteenth to twentieth centuries. He was the philosopher of human autonomy, using our own reason as a way for human beings to discover and live up to basic principles of knowledge and action without outside support. He attempted to explain how reason and experiences interact with thought and understanding. Through this revolutionary proposal, he explained how an individual’s mind can organize their experiences into understanding the way the world works. Kant focused on ethics, the philosophical study of moral actions. He proposed a moral law called the “categorical imperative,” which says that morality is derived from rationality and all moral judgements are rationally supported. He continued to say “what is right is right and what is wrong is wrong; there is no grey area”. He continued to lecture and write at Konigsberg for the next 27 years, which drew a large number of students there in result of his rationalist and later, unorthodox approach to religious text. This led to the political pressure from the government of Prussia, and in 1792, he was barred from teaching or writing on religious subjects by the king, Fredrich William II. He obeyed this injunction until the King’s death five years later. He continued to write on philosophy until the gradual decline of his health, due to his memory loss. Immanuel Kant died in Konigsberg on February 12, 1804, at the age of 80. His last words were “Es ist gut” (“It is good”).
Time and Place he lived Immanuel Kant was born in Konigsberg, Prussia, or what is now Kaliningrad, Russia in 1724. He was the fourth of nine children but the eldest surviving child. He and his family were poor and were pietists, a reform movement within the Lutheran church that believed in hard work, duty, and prayer. Despite his family’s poverty, Kant was able to attend a pietist school and later the University of Königsberg. During his eight years at the Pietist school, Kant acquired his lifelong love for the Latin classics, especially for the naturalistic poet Lucretius.
