The decades surrounding the 1950’s were marked as the Golden Age of baseball, with New York as the world’s Major League capital. With three teams all competing for the title of world champions, New York was alive with hometown spirit. Between the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees, and New York Giants, the city brought home the world title seven consecutive years. Baseball was the heart of America and earned the nickname of America’s pastime. Every man, woman, and child knew the big name players of these three teams.
They produced more than what people were capable of buying which then led to countless layoffs. Elmer Davis stated that, “...when people had bought all they could afford they stopped buying” (Doc 10). The “roaring twenties” negatively impacted the common sense of Americans. The parties and the impulsive purchases warped their vision and put a large percentile into debt. Owners were continuously losing money under the circumstances of customers no longer buying products.
Den Fernandez Consumer Culture in the 1920s As the world moved into the Roaring 20s it attempted to leave behind the destruction left in the wake of World War 1. In that transition back into a semi-normal society, a new fascination emerged from the United States' economic prosperity and consumerism. While the end of World War 1 brought American soldiers back home from the front lines, it also brought back huge economic gains with America’s numerous loans to other countries with the Dawes Plan instated by President Calvin Coolidge.
The 1920's was perhaps the most extravagant time period America has ever experienced in its life span of 241 years. Not only was it an age of dramatic political and social changes but the nation’s total wealth doubled during this time which swept many Americans into a so called consumers society. Many people, for the first time in American history lived in the city rather than on farms and finally had extra money to spend which they used mostly on consumer goods and the newest technology, which created an upsurge of mass entertainment. Though despite the twenties being considered the “golden age” of the United States there was also a huge amount of conflict that was brought along with it as well.
The 1920s were marked by an increase in consumerism due to a booming economy post-World War I (CrashCourse, 2013), the increasing popularity of consumer debt (CrashCourse, 2013) and an increase in the mass production of consumer goods (Osburn, n.d.). Coupled with technological advances, families now had access to mass media (in the form of the radio and television) and modern conveniences, such as household appliances and automobiles. Radio and television broadcasts helped to build a mass culture, where consumers were watching, listening, purchasing and emulating the same things across the nation (Osburn, n.d.). Women’s suffrage granted women the right to vote; some women took this new found voting freedom as license to break from traditional female roles in other areas and began dressing and
The 1920’s was a time when Americans were recovering from World War 1. The economy was better than it had ever been for most Americans. There were many opportunities, choices and personal freedoms during this era that pushed religious and moral boundaries. Although prohibition was still in place, speakeasies provided liquor in its nightclub atmosphere. Corruption also occurred as politicians and law enforcement was bribed to “look the other way” as these activities occurred.
The 1920s were the first years of the new, modern America, with a growing consumer society and new ideas and rules. America saw many changes throughout this decade, including but not limited to social, economic and political changes. Throughout this time, new values were made with the growth of new forms of entertainment and education. After the Progressive Era, the ideas of political figures changed with a new focus on conservative politics and less labor issues. With the new ability for people to buy other products than basic needs, their money went to new inventions, causing new industries to grow.
The American economy throughout the decade of the 1920s experienced significant growth and prosperity. This was enabled by technological advancements, rapid industrialization, as well as increased spending by consumers. The good fortune of the Roaring 20s eventually ran out as the economy entered an alarming recession with stock prices continuing to rise, which eventually gave way to an extreme economic downturn. The United States quickly developed into a more consumer oriented society in the 1920s era.
The 1920s and the 1930s were very separate decades in Canada. The economy between the time periods shifts from prosperity to destruction. Entertainment also evolves over the decades. Finally, women’s roles changed after the effects of the Great Depression. The economy, entertainment, and the roles of women make the 1920s and 1930s quite different.
Modern day America is an economic superpower. However, one and a half centuries ago, this was not the case. In the late 1800’s there was a large boom in terms of population and industrialization in the United States. From this stemmed many new technological innovations, innovations which could be applied to the creation of alluring products for the masses. This led to the rise of a prominent American consumer culture, which was a driving force in the great economic growth of the Gilded Age.
The birth of mass culture would start rolling as the 1920s continued onward.¨During the 1920s, many Americans had extra money to spend, and they spent it on consumer goods such as ready-to-wear clothes and home appliances like electric refrigerators (“The Roaring Twenties”). The invention of the radio boomed throughout the middle class in the 1920s, which also brought the growth of broadcasting, that would connect the nation with the power of waves. Sales of radios soared from $60 million in 1922 to $426 million in 1929. The first commercial radio station began broadcasting in 1919, and during the 1920s, the nation's airwaves were filled with musical variety shows and comedies (“Digital History”). Although the idea of enjoyment flourished, Racial Segregation would affect how society in the southern states would intermingle through education and in the public.
During the 1920s, America experienced a period of mass affluence that changed the country and its culture. The consumption ethic reached its peak during this time and has had an indirect impact on the American economy. Invention, spending, and investing influenced the 1920s. As the 1920s became an economic prosperity in the United State, people started to desire more convenience and free time.
1920s Advertising During the 1920s, advertisement started to increase and expand. Many ideas and tactics were used to lure the attention of the consumers. After World War I, America started to grow with a stable and growing economy. This flourishment made many American's live out the 1920s in prosperity.

Advertisements and announcements are all over us today and it’s interesting to see how that has changed over the time and how now it’s such a big marketing asset every big corporations and business needs in order to be successful. Advertisements are seen everywhere now from billboards to advertisements on television to advertisements online and in YouTube videos which before was not even unheard of. Times have change and so has the way people advertise something. There are still very similar things that are still being done that was done before advertisement was a huge thing. For example you see advertisements all throughout the freeway or streets that many cars pass by every day in order to inform them of a product or persuade someone to buy it.
