The Impact of the Manhattan Project on America and the World In the year 1942, an idea made it to President Roosevelt as a means to an end and a solution to the war raging in the east: the Manhattan Project. The project was proposed by accomplished physicist Robert Oppenheimer and was put into action to put an end to the war. Development in the project was swift due to the funding of the government and the war procurement order granting them priority in getting materials (AAA) from the War Production Board. After Japan failed to surrender, leaflets were dropped over major cities warning of more bombing, but tragically, the warnings were not heeded. On August 9th, 1945, at 11:01 a.m., Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki with an estimated 39,000 casualties. Following the second bombing, Japan entered talks with the U.S. and formally surrendered on September 2, 1945.
After the world saw what happened in Japan, the reaction was very mixed, especially in America, with anti-nuclear protests breaking out all over the country. Russia also looked on with the extension to obtain nuclear weapons for themselves; a mix of this and the ideological conflict between communism and capitalism led us into the Cold War.
