It took two bombs that killed over 226,000 people to end the war with Japan and the second World War. The top secret project to develop these weapons in American was unknown to the world. The top secret project, known as the Manhattan Project, was approved by the President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt. This project was designed to produce a weapon the world had never seen, an atomic bomb. The top secret Manhattan Project developed the first atomic/nuclear weapon and helped bring the war with Japan to and end. A research and development aimed at creating a new type of weapon was the goal of the scientists working on the Manhattan Project. “An American B-29 superfortress bomber, the nicknamed the Enola Gay took off from Tinian Island for the six and a half hour flight to Hiroshima, Japan’s eighth largest city (Campbell).” When fully loaded, the Enola Gay weighed in at 120,000 pounds. A 10,000 pound nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The intended target was a bridge that was located where two rivers came together. Eyewitnesses five miles from the blast said it was brighter than the sun. Two-thirds of the city’s buildings were destroyed and a 4 mile radius around the blast cite was instantly incinerated, leveling the city. Within 30 minutes of the blast, a “black rain” began over the city dropping dirt, dust and radioactive materials on the city and miles away. This spread the contamination well beyond Hiroshima. This initial bomb did not force the Japanese to surrender.
