Edgar Allan Poe wrote many famous suspenseful short stories and poems like The Tell Tale Heart,The Raven and the Black Cat. Poe’s tragic life affected his writing in a variety of ways. He had a life filled with constant depression and sadness. Events in his life that affected his writing were his family and loved ones, alcoholism, and poverty. First of all, Poe’s family impacted some of his writing.

Throughout Edgar Allan Poe’s life, he was surrounded by constant fatality from the death of his parents leading up to the final moments of his dear wife Virginia and it was expressed in his poems and fictional writings.

After his parents died, he lived with another family member who never accepted him as their own son. Later on in life, Poe had served in the military and at that point he started writing poems.

Comparing this theme to his life it is notable to see how young his mother died. As well as, he spoke of his wife dying of an illness, yet interestingly also his wife was also his cousin. I was surprised how much transference there is between his life and his stories.
Learning about how all of the people that he loved, and cared for died will show just about anyone that it was not an easy life for Poe. A critic once said that Poe wrote and knew that any type of love had to come with loss (Kennedy). This showed a lot about Poe’s life as everyone that he loved he actually did lose. This made it a lonely life that made him very depressed. In his poems, Edgar Allan Poe, portrayed that his loneliness has came from the love, and loss of his most important people.
Poe’s parents died only a few years after his birth, sending him to his foster family. During adulthood, both his fiancee and his foster mother died, causing him to gain an alcohol addiction and become severely depressed. Through this adversity, he found an outlet in writing about death and the supernatural, leading to his career in gothic literature.
