Oxford Dictionary defines imperialism as "a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force." Foreign policies of "progressive presidents" tended to be expansion driven, and helped with policies after World War I ended. The causes of World War I from a European point of view were militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. Alliances between countries who were eager for expansion helped lead to the eventual involvement of America in World War I. This, along with American ships being sunk by Germany, America's protection of their own power, and the Zimmerman Telegraph were the main reasons behind American involvement in World War I. McKinley was the first president to really showcase his progressive views. The public used the accidental sinking of the USS Maine to fuel their hatred toward Spain. McKinley gave an “ultimatum” or final choice to Spain: either give Cuba independence or face war with America. They did not agree, so the US declared war on April 25, 1898. The main reason behind this was imperialism. After the war, America gained Puerto Rico, Guam, Cuba, and the Philippines which ultimately let them protect their global power, and allowed for economical advancements through trade with other counties overseas. He also created an "Open Door Policy" which was meant to help promote trade between China and the US. Luckily, the amount of American fatalities were not too terribly high compared to those of other countries. The estimated number of casualties in World War I is sometimes said to be over 38 million people. This was due to the fact that the type of warfare was no ideal for the safety of the soldiers, and infections were very common. As a result of the brutal warfare, people died at an alarming rate. Trench feet was among the extensive list of infections soldier were contracting. The feet of soldiers would be submerged in trenches filled with water for days upon days, allowing for bacteria to eat away at the skin. In America, yellow journalism and propaganda emerged during the time of World War I. Yellow journalism's purpose was to make people feel something. propaganda was information, especially of a biased or misleading nature used to publicize a particular point of view or political cause. Not only did affect the way people viewed the war at the time, it changed journalism dramatically. Journalism today has much more appeal to emotions; it's not longer just the facts, and propaganda is used much more frequently in today's
