"The word algebra comes from the Arabic term al-jabr w 'al-muqābala(meaning "restoration and reduction") used by the great Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī (ca. 780–850) in his writings on the topic" (James Taunton pg.1). Algebra is one of the important bases for all types of math. It is defined as,"the branch of mathematics in which symbols are used to represent numbers or variables, in arithmetical operations" (The Facts on File Dictionary of Mathematics 4). It helps people understand the basic equations and expressions that we use today. Algebra is extremely important to learn because it is involved many other types of math, even though it was created thousands of years ago. The history of algebra has helped the human race become more intelligent and innovative in the world of mathematics. Not only is algebra used in the class room, but also in sports and everyday life. To solve basic problems in life he/she would need to use algebra. For example, if someone has $12 to spend on gas and gas prices are $4 a gallon. How many gallons of gas could he/she buy? The answer is 3 gallons. Simply algebra. That just goes to show how useful and current algebra is, even filling up your car with gas requires algebra. Algebra was first developed in Babylon and Egypt around 2,000 BCE. The Rhind Papyrus shows what types of problems were being solved during that time period. Their algebraic system is very similar to ours. The Babylonians were the first to solve for unknown values, or
