Girls used to be forced into impractical skirts and uniforms in day to day life as well as in their place of work; unfortunately, in many schools they still are. Schools across Britain have begun adopting a gender-neutral school uniform policy for their pupils in order to address this. Many schools have taken different approaches; for some, it means allowing children the choice between two uniforms regardless of gender, for others there is one set uniform for everyone. These changes have been met with both positive and negative comments from parents as well as the pupils themselves, prompting the question: Are gender-neutral school uniforms the best way forward? Or are they a terrible idea that do more damage than good?

The main reason that gender-neutral school uniforms are increasing is due to the increasing number of transgender pupils who feel miserable and distressed with their current uniform. Gender-neutral bathrooms in schools caused backlash due to worries associated with embarrassment and lack of privacy. Many people forget that they use gender-neutral bathrooms every day whether they notice it or not. Bathrooms at home, in aeroplanes and trains, for example, are all gender-neutral and people see no problems associated with using those bathrooms. Why should children using them in a school environment be any different? Many schools have already made this step in creating a gender-neutral school zone for all pupils so making a tiny change to a uniform policy really wouldn’t be a huge change. Transgender pupils would feel more comfortable in their school environment and feel safer and more understood. I fail to see how this could possibly be a negative
