In 2007, “87.9% of the students were opposed to uniforms at MD public school” (Wharton). There is a debate between parents, students and teachers about school uniforms being enforced in public schools since the 2000’s. Many people say that school uniforms shouldn’t be worn in public schools, while others disagree. Despite the debate, there shouldn't be a need to wear school uniforms. School Uniforms should not be worn because they violate a humans right of freedom of expression. According to Matt Forster a writer and the author of “The High Cost of School Uniforms,” “clothing is considered an expression of identity or religious belief… considered a violation of student's' right to free expression.” Having students wear uniforms breaks the first amendment of freedom of expression as Forster has stated. It’s not right for students to come to school forced to wear a uniform, when maybe their religion has them wearing something else. School uniforms are a waste of money and time. The author of “The High Cost of School Uniforms,” Matt Forster declared that “School uniforms maybe a financial burden to poorer families, who will be forced to buy uniforms in addition to regular clothing or are forced to buy second-hand uniforms…” Many poorer families go to public schools and having students wear uniforms will make it stressful for poor families because that’s another waste of money. Also many families have more than one child, which will make the buying uniforms very costly. According to a teacher and parent Lisa Runge, she states that “the average cost of school uniforms for parents is $249 per child.” The price per child shows that they are too expensive, also families have to pay taxes, buy food, etc. School uniforms can cause a big financial burden and therefore should not be forced to wear and
