Higher education is vital to any country growth and development as it is a powerful tool to constitute the knowledge society.Higher education would create knowledge, standard, efficient manpower, development of knowledge society, overall socio economic development, democratic and political stability. India 's higher education system is the third largest in the world, after China and the States. The main governing body at the tertiary level is the University Grants Commission which enforces its standards, advises the government, and helps coordinate between the Centre and the state. Accreditation for higher learning is overseen by 12 autonomous institutions established by the University Grants Commission.In India, "University" means a University …show more content…

In India too, the private sector could play a key role in dealing with these issues through innovative models supported by an enabling regulatory framework and environment. The private sector can be expected to play an instrumental role in the achievement of these outcomes through the creation of knowledge networks, research and innovation centers, corporate-backed institutions, and support for faculty development”.

Hitherto, the private sector has played an important role in the growth of the higher education sector, especially in professional disciplines such as engineering and management. High potential demand for higher education and insufficient government spend on capacity creation are expected to result in a substantial infrastructure and investment deficit. In this backdrop, the role of the private sector has assumed increased opportunity for private sector players.
According to Planning Commission XII five year Plan document the private sector in higher education has contributed significantly to higher education expansion in XI plan and private higher education accounts for 58.5% of enrolments. The Government of India has planned to encourage the role of private sector in XII Plan and would establish longer & higher quality however it would be ensured that commitment towards quality, equity and transparency are not
