This report is intended to highlight the external environmental factors that counteract and/or contribute to the success of the University of Maryland’s objectives. The University of Maryland (UMD) is a highly accredited public university in the state of Maryland. Established in 1856, UMD has emerged and developed into an industry that that offers thousands of diverse educational programs at various student status levels; such as undergraduate and graduate. The educational industry is comprised of elementary, secondary, postsecondary and training institutions. Each one of these sectors have their own level of competition, as well as social and economic impact that determines it current positioning. All postsecondary institutions (also referred, as higher educational institutions) seem to offer the same type of services, with the same set up fundamentals. Thus, it makes it a little challenging to estimate the universities’ current positioning as a company. Yet, this challenge has allowed higher educational institutions to continually update and improve their programs and academic structure. The demand of exceptional faculty and staff are all contributing factors to the industry current positioning. Positioning helps clients to identify the company and decipher if they would want to invest and/or partake of the distinct services offered. Therefore, it becomes essential for universities to incorporate numerous diverse programs into its institution; and implement unique structures to disseminate information. The more an institution is willing to offer, the better it is for them to draw more students and factor in the cost into its tuition. As a result, more people enroll in higher educational institution in high demand. Recession usually leads to unemployment with blue-collar position, and the ripple effect of people not paying their bills (mortgage, credit cards, etc). Therefore, it can be concluded that recession affects the economy in a major way.
