The functionalists believe that for a society to be functional and peaceful there must be consensus and harmony. There are a set of values, norms, beliefs, and culture that everyone has agreed on. These ensure that the society remains harmonious. Institutes in the society are formed and each individual institute follows these set norms and values and work together. This way, everyone benefits from each other and the society is functional, harmonious, and does not change for the coming generations. For individuals to be functional and beneficial in the society, they go through a process of socialisation. Different institutions in the society will be involved in different levels of socialization. Primary socialization is done by the family, which is the first institute. The family ensures that their children are raised in ways that will allow them to grow up to be fully functional adults in society. This is a strength as it helps in keeping the society functional for generations. The family will teach them how to talk, walk, and behave according to different situations. They also tend to help with the formation of the children’s identities and personalities as the children are highly and very easy to be influenced. They watch how their older siblings or adults are behaving around them and will copy that without knowing whether it is a good or bad thing. If children do behave improperly or do bad, families can use informal sanctions. Children can be punished or grounded
