The telephone is an invention that has been fully developed through scientific and technological efforts. From wireless telephones, to digital ones, up to the creation of cellphones and tablets (with sim card slots); these innovations only show how much we’ve accomplished in the field of telecommunications. However, telephones still exist in spite of the mass production of the said devices. In addition, telephones are found in most houses, offices, and different facilities. This makes us wonder how what’s considered as an old piece of technology managed to retain its place in our daily lives. In this research, we will discuss how telephones came to be and its importance to society, which in turn clarifies the earlier question. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY The invention of telephone was not achieved in a single attempt. According to Britannica, “..neither Gray nor Bell had yet constructed a working telephone that could convey speech..” by the time they decided to file for patent. After approximately 3 weeks, only Bell’s patent was granted based on its earlier filing time. The patent includes both the telephone instrument and system. The reason why most books only mention Bell as the sole inventor of the telephone might be from the said patent. As unfair as it may seem, many inventors aside from Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell such as Charles Bourseul, Johann Philipp Reis, did their respective research and utilized the ideas of one another in order to come up with the device
