HERITAGE FAIR TIMELINE In 1908, Saskatchewan Government Telephones (later called SaskTel) became a company. They founded SGT on June 12 in 1908. Dramatic changes happened to their business in 1909. When they bought out the bell company, the Saskatchewan Telephone Company and the Wapella-Harris Telephone Company, STG was rapidly growing. At this time, their facility had 18 telephone exchanges, 53 long distance offices and 492 pole miles of long distance across the province. Estevan, Moose Jaw, North Battleford, Prince Albert and Regina all purchased SaskTel telephone exchanges. A big change in Saskatchewan occurred when SaskTel brought cellular service into the province. In 1991, SaskTel offered call display, call return, call trace and wireless service-the first company to do so in Canada. When the time came for 1989, SaskTel provided wireless service. 5 years later, area codes started to be in use in 1994, causing a big change in Saskatchewan. 1995 was one of the biggest years for SaskTel though. Their customer base exceeded 450,000 compared to 1908, of a total of 3,000, and covered 98% of homes in Saskatchewan. SaskTel also received a $191.8M profit. A year later in 1996, SaskTel became the first telecommunications company in Canada to have commercial high speed internet. A while later in 2003, SaskTel donated a $1.7M donation to over 1,500 organizations across the province. 2004 occurred and more graphics and games were introduced, not to mention ringtones.
