Important Life Lessons Learned From Basketball

The moment right before the coach blows the whistle, the muscles of our legs getting ready to run and us getting into the, Ready, Set, Go stance is just one of the reasons why discipline plays a big part in basketball and a good aspect of life. This also ties up the three important life lessons I have learned from basketball. I have learned several important life lessons from basketball such as sportsmanship, teamwork, and discipline.

Sportsmanship is one of the best things to have while playing basketball. Without sportsmanship their would not be any willingness to compete honorably as Coach Michael Josephson says "Too many youngsters are confused about the meaning of fair play and sportsmanship and ... have no concept of honorable competition. As a result they engage in illegal conduct and employ doubtful gamesmanship techniques to gain a competitive advantage." Without sportsmanship the competition would be lopsided because of their not being any sportsmanship. Coaches of 9- to 15-year old athletes in a 2005 study by three midwestern universities indicated a very high level of agreement with the statement, "Teaching sportsmanship is a major part of a coach's job." Without teamwork their would a mess of organization for the team. It also would create chaos. Everybody would only care for their own stats without teamwork and would not care about any other stats, and the would think only of themselves. I personally think this myself. And if the coach want to have a successful team they need to have teamwork. But with teamwork can come many great things such as success and motivation to win and with team cheering it just gives them that extra (Oomph) that makes them feel needed in the team.
