I felt, I needed to help and inspire my community to stand up against injustice, but I needed to redefined myself through the military and college. Aside from my family and school, this organization has had an incredible impact on my life, not only providing me with many unique and amazing experiences, but by shaping the foundation of my character by instilling in me the three core principles of the Young Marines: Discipline, Leadership, and Teamwork and also by emphasizing the importance of community service. I have had many amazing and unique experiences as a Young Marine which included the challenges of promotion to become the senior ranking officer, learning many new skills such as CPR, teaching Drug Demand Reduction, leading and mentoring the members of the Unit, going on encampments and traveling. In my sophomore year, my Unit Commander, a Korean War veteran, selected me to travel with him to Seoul. Every few years he chooses a Young Marine to take to South Korea based on merit.

Of course I was not lacking respect before marching band, I respected my parents, my teachers, and many others, but marching band changed my idea of respect for the better. In the band, like I explained before there is a copious amount of student leaders, and these leaders are constantly criticizing your marching, your playing, and anything they can in order to make you better. At first this criticism is very hard to take, everyone feels like they are doing their best, but then someone, only two years older than you, is coming around telling them that they are not good enough. It is very arduous to appreciate and respect that criticism however, that is something band teaches people. I never before believed that respect and criticism would go together, but now I understand know several ways that they do.

In school, if I treat a teacher with respect, they might favor bumping your grade up from a high B+ to an A-. When I make friends, I have to be respectful as well. If I act rude and condescending, then no one would want to be my friend. As humans, we are heavily social animals and our level of success in our lives depend on how well we can work with others. Having respect is a major aspect of this social interaction, making it very important.
