On September 20, 1878, in Maryland Baltimore Upton Sinclair was born.
Relevance between Food and Humans with Rhetorical Analysis In the modern industrial society, being aware of what the food we eat come from is an essential step of preventing the “national eating disorder”. In Michael Pollan’s Omnivore’s Dilemma, he identifies the humans as omnivores who eat almost everything, which has been developed into a dominant part of mainstream unhealthiness, gradually causing the severe eating disorder consequences among people. Pollan offers his opinion that throughout the process of the natural history of foods, deciding “what should we have for dinner” can stir the anxiety for people based on considering foods’ quality, taste, price, nutrition, and so on.
The Third Plate by chef Dan Barber is a non-fiction book that examines agriculture, food, and sustainability, which he argues for a new way of thinking about America’s food system. Barber explores how our current system is unsustainable and unhealthy for American’s, and tries to find new ways to change the system by visiting several farms, restaurants, and high class chefs. Barber used a storytelling technique in his writing to convey his viewpoints and facts from a historical illustration, personal experiences, and modern day systems. In the opening part of The Third Plate, Barber tells a historic story about a farmer from Spain who created new ways to modify his wheat in a healthier and tastier way. This opening set a tone for the rest of the book by establishing his approach to exploring sustainable agriculture.
]The first rule I chose in Michael Pollan’s “Food Rules” was rule eight, which was to avoid food products with the word “lite” or the terms “low fat” or “nonfat” in their names. I chose this rule because when eating these foods you’re not getting the vitamins, nutrients, and many other things that strengthen your body. I also chose this rule because, some odd chemicals would be added to incorporated the fat or macromolecule taken away. I can incorporated this rule into my regular diet by having the “whole” version of the product instead of “low fat” or “nonfat”.
Michael Pollan’s Escape from the Western Diet connects well with what Mary Maxfield says in her article. Both Pollan and Maxfield talk about the ways that dieting is taking over American people’s healths and causing them to become even unhealthier. In Mary Maxfield’s argument she talks about how people believe everything that diet industries say, even though they know that the information they give you is false. This connects really well with what Michael Pollan talks about in his article, which is that people know that these theories that are used for the Western diet are not accurate, but yet they still decide to use the Western diet to help them become healthier.
In Michael Pollan’s essay “Escape from the Western Diet,” he directly to Americans about the western diet and why he believes they need to escape from it. The reason Americans should escape the western diet is to avoid the harmful effects associated with it such as “western diseases” (Pollan, 420). To support his view on the issue, Pollan describes factors of the western diet that dictate what Americans believe they should eat. These factors include scientists with their theories of nutritionist, the food industry supporting the theories by making products, and the health industry making medication to support those same theories. Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads.
Author of the essay “Eat Food: Food Defined” Michael Pollan, states that everything that pretends to be a food really isn’t a food. Michael persuaded me into agreeing with his argument by talking about how people shouldn’t eat anything their great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food and avoid food products containing ingredients that are unpronounceable, lists more than five, and contains high fructose corn syrup. He opened my eyes to information I wouldn’t have thought about or researched myself. He got into depth about a type of Sara Lee bread that contains way more ingredients than needed to make the bread, including high fructose corn syrup that isn’t good for you. Marketers are doing this to sell more of their product by making it taste
Then the current controversies of over processed foods was looked at and analyzed. Future predictions were researched to see what could be changed to help people be aware of what they could be doing to their bodies. Finally a survey was taken to see how much people know about processed foods and how much they consume them. It was found
Obesity and overweight are now the second leading cause of death in the United States, and the disappointing truth is that both are preventable diseases. People give up to easily when it comes to adapting to change. Changing eating habits is a difficult task to do if a strong mindset is not in place. Fast food is tempting and the body is easily manipulated by it. Therefore when doctors place restrictions on people’s diet the results are rarely effective.
Food is a necessity that every living thing needs to survive. Humans demand food increases by the minute and with the help of new technologies, they are given to us quickly. But very seldom do people stop and think about the consequence of the food we buy so easily at a grocery shop. It is not our fault that we do not often stop to think about the kind of food we are buying because a lot of it is hidden from us. The effect that it is having on the environment, the work conditions and the side effects of eating some of these foods.
Living a nutritious diet comprised of consuming a proper meal that has been made preferably from raw meals. In actual fact, getting fresh local dishes can be hard due many factors in the way that there are only limited choices indulge by the provider or living in a distant place from the sources that can provide these fresh raw foods. These remotely factors lead consumers to purchase foods that can be stocked up inside the cupboards or would take lesser time in preparing the meals which is in the form of processed food. Processed foods are the type of food that during production has been amended and freezing, canning, baking or even drying are the ways food are processed. With this, processed foods are convenient due to its easy handling and less time consuming in preparations.
“Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food” (Hardy, 2006). The Greeks followed this idea by the philosopher Hippocrates, but today’s society does not take the message seriously. A majority of people eat harmful foods and do not receive the nutrition they need to stay healthy. There are a number of reasons why nutrition is lacking. A lot of teens and college students eat snacks that are not healthy such as chips, pop, candy, etc.
In “How Junk Food Can End Obesity,” by David H. Freedman, he claims that processed foods can help fix the obesity crisis in a more realistic manner, rather than whole-some foods. The popular opinion emphasizes whole-some foods because they aren’t informed about the similitude between processed and unprocessed foods. The essence of the essay is that people believe processed foods are bad and unhealthy for us, therefore whole-some foods are highly recommended for the health of an individual. Freedman mentions many prominent authors who wrote books on food processing, but the most influential voice in the food culture Freedman makes a point of is, American journalist, Michael Pollan. The media and Michael Pollan indicate that everything should be replaced with real, fresh, and unprocessed foods, instead of engineering in as much sugar, salt, and fat as possible into industrialized foods.
Processed includes chemically processed, refined ingredients, and artificial substances. They have many artificial ingredients with many to zero real food. Using preservatives manufactures can stop spoiling, colorants to make desirable, with flavor and text rants. The production and consumption of processed foods and the artificial ingredients has lead to numerous health related problems in today’s society, including low nutritional intake, over consumption, obesity and illness. Our society has helped create a definition of dieting that is not only harmful to the body but also does not work. The proper definition of a diet would be the food and drink a person consumes daily and the mental and physical circumstances connected to eating. The public’s definition of a diet is to restrict oneself to small amounts or special kinds of food in order to lose weight. Those who engage in this sort of dieting begin with the wrong mentality. They believe by undertaking a diet they will lose weight and keep it off, when in reality most people fail with diets.
