The novel, In His Steps , could be considered a psychological novel or sociological novel. The novel had an older way of speech, yet had a wonderful message and good story line. Some of the characters that I noticed were Henry Maxwell, Rachel Winslow, the shabby stranger, and Jasper Chase. Reverend Henry Maxwell is a strong and powerful developed character. He had a great influence on his people and showed sensitivity as well. He is a man of God and stays faithful to God throughout the novel. He has a purpose throughout and can be though of as purposeful or goal-orientated. He stays dedicated to his goals and will get them achieved no matter how hard. Chase is full of bitterness throughout the novel and his character is very moody. He has no problem showing his feelings and his moods vary too often. His character is not as developed and it is a very weak character, especially compared to Maxwell and Rachel. Though Rachel shows interest in him in the novel, he is quite different from herself. His character is very introverted and self-perserving, I guess you could say. Lastly, one character that I believed played an important role in the story developement was the shabby stranger. Although his character wasn't there for long, his impact on the story was very touching and meaningful. His speech in the church is what sparked their questioning and starting developing the plot. The setting of the novel, the town of Raymond, gives more strength and developement to the novel and its purpose of showing the sinful state of human nature and the battle of trying to do what is right under all the pressure and the temptation. Lastly, the plot of the story, I believe, starts to develop once the shabby stranger shows up. The beginning of the novel is very typical and despite the vandalism that happens to Maxwell's house in the beginning. The vandalism gives an example of the bad things that are happening in Raymond. The reverend is an average man who lives in a small, affordable home with his wife. The reverend is interrupted by a homeless man, in which he says he has nothing for the man and wishes him luck. This is the start of the plot, the idea of, ' What would Jesus do?'. The same shabby stranger shows up to the church service on Sunday to say something. He opens all the church goers eyes to the act that they all follow Jesus, yet they do not do what Jesus does. What is a follower?
