Roy Hobbs Quest Hero Essay I agree with the statement, “Roy Hobbs is an excellent example of a quest hero.” Roy demonstrated the characteristics of a quest hero in three main areas: he is seen as above ordinary mortals, he performs unusual feats at an early age and he travels through setbacks with ultimate triumph. In these areas Roy proved he is an excellent example of a quest hero.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze how Jim Jones slowly and manipulatively built his congregation through a recognition that he could capitalize on and exploit individual’s troubles in order to achieve, keep, and act out his authority. The social, religious, and economic climate of the 1960s combined with the chaos of the 1970s created the dependency, idealism, and rationalization that Jim Jones used to slowly yet blatantly manipulate his way to power and eventually create Jonestown. Jim Jones was born in rural Crete. Indiana on May 13, 1931, to Lynetta and James Jones. Early on Jones was different from the other children he grew up around.
In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight there are many archetypal figures influencing Gawain’s growth as a hero. Gawain must deal with many characters throughout his journey, these dealings reveal many sides of his character and tend to his moral growth. He learns many things from different aspects of the journey but he learns the most from the interactions with the characters. A number of characters in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight play key archetypal roles in the perfecting of the hero’s moral development. The temptress’ actions of seduction towards Gawain as the Lady of the castle, take place over three days, and are three trials Gawain must go through to prove his moral standing.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is about a man who happens to be an agent that travels the world on missions. On this mission he is traveling to Peru to find the missing crystal skull and put it back where it belongs. Not only is he looking for the skull, he is helping Mutt find his mom, who was kidnapped, and Ox. Jones and Mutt finds a coded map in Ox’s prison cell where he was trying to figure out how to find the crystal skull or how to put it back. This journey will lead to mystery and relationships between Mutt and Jones.
In Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie, Alexie’s father’s love for books grew to make his self-love books ending up in Alexie teaching himself how to read. Alexie describes the stereotypes and what is expected of Indian children and how Indian children were expected to basically have no knowledge Many lived up to those expectations inside the classroom but invalidated them on the outside. While other children were doing this, Alexie’s father was one of the few Indians on the reservation who went to Catholic School on purpose and was also an devoted reader. Alexie grew up around books. His father had a strong love for books as he bought them by the pound from pawn shops, goodwill and the salvation army.
Elie Wiesel’s novel Night is required reading in just about every sophomore English class in the country. The novel, along with a lifetime of humanitarian work, earned Wiesel the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. Night is one of the most powerful depictions we have of the Jewish experience of the Holocaust; a work carefully crafted to achieve Wiesel’s ultimate purpose: to bear witness to the atrocities and allow the reader to feel the suffering of the Jews and of millions of others so that in identifying with these characters, the truth seeps into the bone marrow of the reader and fires a determination to do whatever is necessary that atrocities like this never happen again. Wiesel opens the novel with a character sketch of Moshe the Beadle.
Furthermore, I learned from this documentary that Jim Jones was someone that did not practice what he preached and a manipulator that had a lot of power, but I was surprised by the amount of people he had such an impact on. He nurtured and protected them when society turned them away and I recognized that is how he gained all of that power. Unfortunately, this power he had resulted in the mass suicide of nine hundred and nine people in Jonestown,
He goes to fight the beast and finds himself unsatisfied with his victory leaving him wanting more. He later goes on a journey searching for immortality. This journey is purely motivated by the benefit he would receive and he was not concerned for the effect it may have on others. This shows a great difference in the twos journeys and motivation styles because of the intent behind
Jim Jones was the leader of The Peoples Temple and was responsible for the death of more than 900 people including children on November 18, 1978.(“Jonestown”) Jones was the leader who seemed of good heart but in reality he was an egotistical person who only wanted power and able to control people for his own benefit. Jones had a way to put a new idea into people's minds that society was corrupted and that by making their own organization that they would be able to escape that world by coming and joining him. He would come up with all sorts of ways into making the people think he was a god to them. ”All of the children addressed Jones as “Dad,” undoubtedly a somewhat upsetting experience for their parents to go through.
Both Parry and Jack play the knight and the Fisher King interchangeably throughout the movie. Parry tells Jack the story of the Holy Grail and the Fisher King. Jack has never heard of this and becomes interested when Parry tells him about it. He says that “the keeper of the Holy Grail may heal the hearts of men” (Gilliam). Both men want the Holy Grail during different parts of the movie.
Life is full of doors, some are open and some are closed. There comes a time when sealed doors need to be broken open so everyone can reach their maximum potential and goals in life, just like Sherman Alexie did in “Superman and Me.” An example of Sherman Alexie breaking down doors is one of his quotes from “Superman and Me,” “this might be an interesting story all by itself. A little Indian boy teaches himself to read at an early age and advances quickly. He reads Grapes of Wrath in kindergarten when other children are struggling through Dick and Jane.
There have been a few times in my life that stood out to me, one of them being my first trip to Darien Lake. It was the end of the 8th grade, having not gone to DC like most, I was able to go to wonderful Darien Lake. From the beginning of the day, maybe even the night before I had set one goal for myself; to ride the tallest roller coaster there. With that in mind, let me get to the actual story.
Superman, Gandalf, Jay Gatsby, and Harry Potter. All of these character have something in common, all of them are heroes. Heroes are common in many literary works. They help portray messages and feelings in ways the reader would understand. There are three main archetypes of heroes.

I agree with Michael Uslan where he argues that superhero characters are a modern mythology. Although science can help explain the background of the superheroes powers, superheroes are usually regarded as a Saviour rather than a science experiment. Since superheroes are much more unrealistic, it tends towards being a mythology instead. Past mythology has iconic stories such as David and Goliath, the labours of Hercules, and the story of Moses. There are also counterparts which can be found in modern day comic books adventure.
