What are rights?
Rights mean the legal entitlements that everyone should receive. For example, every individual has the right to live in a society where they will not be discriminated abused because of their gender, sexuality, religion or race. There are many basic rights every individual is entitled to and it’s important that their rights are respected. Especially within a health and social care setting, as everyone has the right to refuse a certain type of treatment.

It’s important that if a service user requests to see their medical records the service has to give them to them as the service user has the right to see them.
To be able to communicate in their preferred way:
All service users have to right to talk in their own language within any setting. It’s important that the service has different methods of communication whether this is verbal or non-verbal. For example, a doctor surgery having a translator on site for patients that cannot talk or understand English.
To be cared for in a way that meets their needs:
Within a nursing home a service user cannot eat hard bits of food it’s the nursing homes job to make sure the chef knows this and the service user’s food is soft so don’t choke. This will then meet the service user’s needs.
To take account their choices and protect them:
For example, a Jehovah witness comes into the hospital and refuses a blood transfusion the doctors and nurses must then come up with a different method taking their choices to refuse the treatment so then the hospital have to protect the service user.
