Before the Industrial Revolution occurred, people often manufactured their own items in their homes. But then in the late 1760’s, industrialization became key. Industrialization is the introduction of new machines, and other technologies in an area. This brought many jobs, and even improved transportation, communication, and banking. It even boosted the America’s population about 57%. Because of the jobs increasing, people moved to the area, making it more like a city. This is also known as urbanization. While the standard living for some people was beneficial, for the lower class and the poor, it was a long day of working for them. And then in 1850, Great Britain had more people living in the cities than in rural areas. Then, Europe and North America also had millions of migrants move to the city. In document two, it is showing how Germantown had only about 800 people living there. Then, once the development of new jobs, Mr. T Ashton, employed 1500 workers in his factories, built 3000 homes, and all women were decently dressed. They were even taking good care of the town for people’s comfort and satisfaction so more people could move there. In document three, steel production increased tremendously. In 1740, there were 17,350 tons of steel. Then 160 years later, there was about 9,000,000 tons of steel. This process is also known as the Bessemer Process. The Bessemer Process allowed the process of steel to be easier and cheaper to make. This boosted our economy and gave people more job opportunities. But the increase of steel also increased child labor, long working hours, and poverty. It also led to more pollution. In document five, it is showing that factories are polluting the environment. Pollution decreases air and water quality, leaving a negative impact on plants, animals, and humans as well.But having a lot of factories increases job opportunities, which increases lots of items being produced at the factories, which then increases the money we make as an economy. While people moving to the cities is a positive concept, there are many negatives that came out of it. This then lead to poor sanitation, more pollution, and over-crowded places. Once the river water got contaminated with people's sewage, a disease, Cholera went around. In 1831-1832, 7000 people died because of this.
