Despite holding the title “Informatics Nurses,” these nurses hold much more responsibility than just being a nurse working within the informatics field. An informatics nurse not only deals with the healthcare aspect of nursing, such as defining patient care and delivering quality patient care, but also deals with the technology side of healthcare, such as interpreting data and making changes within healthcare based off of that data (Kwiatkoski, 2021). The role of an informatics nurse varies as these nurses take on a multitude of different roles within the healthcare system. One of those roles is being a systems educator. A systems educator is a nurse who coordinates and provides education about computer software and applications to all individuals who use the computer system (Sewell, 2016). This role also encompassess educating individuals on clinical computer applications and online documentation processes (Sewell, 2016). Another role that a nurse informaticist can take on is being an information technology nursing advocate. This role allows the nurse to assess the needs of clinical nurses with technology (Sewell, 2016). These nurses interpret these needs, and make solutions that are technology based (Sewell, 2016). As for a superuser, this role for a nurse informaticist means that they are the support system for a specific unit (Sewell, 2016). What that means is that these nurses assist clinical nurses, or anyone who uses the system, with troubleshooting, functionality, and procedural issues (Sewell, 2016). A clinical systems coordinator/analyst has many responsibilities, and these include coordination of the aspects of planning, design, development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of the information system (Sewell, 2016). These types of nurses will also troubleshoot any issues within the system and support the entire system as well (Sewell, 2016). Lastly, a system specialist basically acts as a liaison between the nurses on a unit/agency and the information services (Sewell, 2016). These nurses are able to become a resource for clinical nurses, but also act as a representative for clinical nurses (Sewell, 2016). It is evident that just because one is an informatics nurse, that does not mean that they are simply a nurse working within informatics.
