As you make your way to Downtown Los Angeles, you will notice that there are towns for different types of cultures. To name a couple, there is China Town and Korea Town. Olvera street, located in the oldest part of Los Angeles, is a street dedicated to preserving the Hispanic culture. Olvera street also known as La Placita Olvera or El Pueblo Historical Monument is open seven days a week (Rondeau). Although Olvera Street is similar to the other towns, it provides a unique experience through its numerous events that celebrate Mexican traditions.
Poverty, sexism, and racism are all aspects of American life that dictate the lives of people, and each aspect affects the population in their own way. In the novel The Street, Ann Petry captures the setting and identity of Harlem in the 1940’s. The story explores the good and bad obstacles faced by Lutie Johnson, a young woman struggling to find a place to settle with her son. As a single mother Lutie battles to balance her home life and work life while facing monetary and social pressures. She must juggle all of these responsibilities while staying morally sound, a balance that is hard to maintain.
These theaters consisted of schools, churches, factories, and closed off streets (Ross) . This may have been one influence to the off-off-broadway theatre movement, later in the 1960’s. They did not produce shows in every state because many lacked the proper theatre professionals (Flanagan). However, 40 states did have shows running and before this many people did not have access to such a luxury. Theatre was very expensive in the 1930’s.
The U Street Corridor located in Washington D.C., is a unique place full of vibrancy and resilience. Once known for its ability to nurture prominent African Americans, it now houses shops of all kinds, along with trendy restaurants. No longer largely a black community, people from varying races and age groups call it home which can be seen simply by walking the streets. Sharp, abrupt sound of the ringing telephone spread through the house. However, it was not the telephone that woke Blanche up. It was the wild (animalistic, as she immediately thought) yell of Stanley Kowalski receiving the information about his wife giving birth to a baby boy. He was having a son, just like he wanted!
There are also added sounds that give a more realistic feel to the production. In the scenes where the characters are at a shop, a ringing bell is heard when someone exits or enters the "door". In addition, before the first scene of the play sounds of cars and traffic can be heard throughout the theater. These sounds were used to metaphorically transport the audience to New York City. These added noises and sounds made the play appear believably set in the mid-1950s.

This is because among the many arts that were growing in Harlem during the 1920s, theater and music were greatly affected. In terms of theater, the Lafayette Theater was employed by many African American actors, some of them belonging to the Lafayette players. Also, some big performers made it there, like Bessie Smith, Ethel Walters, Moms Mabley, and Duke Ellington.

Atlantic City was once the powerhouse of the east coast raking in tourists, large sums of money, and monopolizing the gambling industry. Nick Paumgarten wrote “The Death and Life of Atlantic City”, which states “The casino closures in Atlantic City have contributed to the loss of nearly 10,000 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics” (102). Four out of the twelve casinos closed which contributed to 8,000 of those jobs. Three of the remaining casinos are currently facing bankruptcy which contributes to the other 2,000 people left jobless. The question Atlantic City is faced with a matter of needing more gambling or less?
Inner city neighborhoods are often thought of as a place of violence. People appear tough, and they act against others before others can act against them. While their way of life may seem odd to those of that did not grow up in the inner city, I believe that the code of the street acts as informal social control. How an individual acts or looks can have serious consequences, and sometimes those consequences can be deadly. The code of the street is simply a response to unemployment, available jobs that pay less than living wage, and a general lack of hope.
My trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art was something I had never experienced before. Being assigned the task to attend this museum, by none other than my music professor, ended up to be a win-win situation for me. I expected my trip to the Metropolitan Museum to be a tedious experience to complete a tiresome task of finding pieces of art, but to my amazement things took an unexpected turn. Psychologist Sigmund Freud developed an idea that there is more than one aspect to the human psyche. The human psyche rather is structured into three separate parts including: id, ego, and superego. In a similar manner, Tennessee Williams has three main characters in his Southern Gothic play, A Streetcar Named Desire. In addition to the human psyche as the three mentioned categories, Freud introduced psychoanalysis, which is the belief that people could be cured through developing their unconscious thoughts or motivations into their conscious decisions, receiving insight (McLeod). Characters are shaped by their thoughts and actions, as this is present in A Streetcar Named Desire.
