Throughout Israel’s complex history, tensions between Jews and Arabs have existed. Much of the conflict in recent years has centered around who is occupying which areas including the Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights, and the West Bank. Numerous wars and acts of violence between the Arabs and Jews have ensued since the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. One of the most impactful wars is the Six-Day War also called the Third Arab-Israeli War.

During an air battle with Syria in April 1967, the Israeli Air Force shot down six Syrian MiG fighter jets. In addition, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser mobilized Egyptian forces in the Sinai on May 14, 1967, and he later requested the removal of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) and closed the Gulf of Aqaba to Israeli shipping. He also announced that the Straits in Tiran would be closed to Israeli vessels.

In response to the mobilization of its Arab neighbors, Israel staged a sudden preemptive air assault that destroyed the majority of Egypt’s air force. The Egyptians were caught by surprise, and nearly the entire Egyptian air force was destroyed. At the same time, Israeli troops launched a ground offensive into the Gaza Strip and the Sinai, and Nasser ordered the evacuation of the Sinai. Within three days, Israel had achieved overwhelming victory, capturing the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula up to the east bank of the Suez Canal.
