The Canadian Food Guide is a prominent feature in society but carries many problems. Sharon Kirkey points out three main problems regarding the Canadian Food Guide such as how outdated it may be, how it does not address certain issues like obesity, and how it ignore the context of eating. The main premise is to show how the Canadian Food guide is not a suitable reference anymore and needs a serious facelift.

To start off, I will begin by discusses Sharon Kirkey first main problem with the Canadian Food Guide. The first ever guide was developed in 1942 and has evolved since. The problem is that the current version of the guide is outdated. In the current guide, the suggested servings of milk are 2-3 but today, Dr. David Ludwig, of Boston’s Children’s Hospital, argued humans “have no nutritional requirement for animal milk” whatsoever. This is one of the many examples of why the food guide is old. Not only is it outdated, but they do not reinforce proper health anymore. Trans fat, according to the head of Health Canada’s task force, is a toxin that’s unsafe in any amount and yet our food guide only says we should limit it (Kirkey, 2015). Finally, the modeling the guide uses to determine calories and energy is outdated too. Although many foods have become more calorie-dense, and even natural produce like apples are simply bigger, serving sizes have remained virtually unchanged since 1977 (Kirkey, 2015).
