You must have heard about ALS Ice challenge, a strange and mysterious viral phenomenon that is making rounds around the social network. The challenge goes that whomever is tagged by the previous participant must either pour a bucket of Ice on them and post the or donate $10 to ALS medical research. Many celebrities have participated in this trend ranging from Vin Diesel to George Bush. However many still are unaware of what ALS actually is.

ALS which stands for Amyotropic lateral sclerosis also known as charcot disease/motor neurone disease (MND) and Lou Gehrig’s Disease (in USA).

Naming aside what is ALS? Before i go on i will just list few facts

1. For start ALS is not contagious.

Apart from these signs there are currently no medical test that can confirm ALS and hence it is relied upon neurological and psychological indicators to detect the disease.

6. Main cause of death of ALS patients is respiratory failure as per National institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke (NINDS), and most people die within 1st five years of disease.

7.however about one in ten of ALS patients survive past ten years. In rare cases some may stop progressing and even undergo reversal, but reasons for it is currently unknown.

8. So far the ice bucket challenge has raised more that 50 million in donations compared to meagre 2.2 million last year.
So far the Ice Bucket Challenge is a fundraising success and has helped the ongoing research at NINDS . As of August 22, The ALS Association reports receiving $53.3 million in donations compared to $2.2 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 21). In addition to their global research program, the ALS Association provides services to people living with ALS.
As far as the nature and causes of ALS It is a neurodegenerative disease and causes can be wide and varied. About 95% of ALS is sporadic and occurs without familial history, while 5-10% is genetic. Certainly there is an indication that certain genetic variants can enhance the likelihood of
