Thank you for reviewing Ronald Cocks, an 89 year old gentleman with an array of medical comorbidities. Ronald has a history of prior asbestos exposure and is an ex-smoker of approximately 20 pack years. He is quite frail, although still ambulates independently with a 4-wheel frame and is currently living at a retirement village. Ronald was referred to me just prior to Christmas with a two month history of sudden onset voice hoarseness. He was noted to have a 4.5cm left upper lobe cavitatory mass in close proximity to the left upper lobe pulmonary arteries and abutting the left upper lobe pleura.
Asbestos, according to Betterhealth.vic.gov.au, is a naturally occurring heart and flame resistant. Having contact with this chemical can lead to a variety of illnesses, including asbestosis, lung cancer and a cancer called mesothelioma. Bernie Baton, who was a lathe operator at James Hardie Co & Pty Ltd, which is an industrial building materials company, was working with this chemical from 1968 to 1974 without his awareness. Eventually, Bernie Banton was diagnosed with asbestosis in 1999. James Hardie was fully aware of the dangers asbestosis can cause, but ignored the facts and didn’t do anything about it; rather he continued to use it in his products and didn’t inform any employees of asbestosis’ risks.
When we breathe in radon gas, the toxic particles actually stick to our lungs and have the ability to alter our cells. The EPA’s acceptable level of radon gas is hundreds of times higher than the acceptable levels of carcinogens in our food and beverages. The new law does not require mitigation be completed for homes with unsafe levels, but only that the home be tested before a sale. Consider how much time your family spends in the basement and lower levels of the house where radon exposure is highest. Do you or your loved ones sleep on a lower level of the house in a radon hotspot?
Miners and their families can develop a variety of health issues from coal dust and chemicals. One such example, is mesothelioma, “Despite many years of clinical research, there is still no effective therapy for malignant mesothelioma; untreated the median survival time is 9 months.” (M. H. Ross and J. Murray) . Asbestos has a wide reach with all who come into contact with it possibly developing illness, not realizing until they develop problems many years into the
This shows that mining coal causes many diseases that could kill the miners working on mining. Miners also run the risk of respiratory damage through the high levels of dust and other chemical particulates present in deep coal mining facilities. Some of the disorders caused by these particulates include COPD, coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP, also known as black lung), and progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). The threat of damage to hearing is also a constant concern as the equipment miners work around is quite
One example that Sontag uses to describe the difference between the two diseases is that while patients affected by Tuberculosis can often see their X-rays concluding they have tuberculosis, cancer patients are unable to examine their

Healthcare. We all need it, but we don't all have it, and because of that simple fact, we are one of the sickest countries in the industrial world. Our life expectancy for the first time ever is going down, not up. We have the highest maternal mortality rates in the industrial world. And the worst outcomes per cost anywhere.
