I am thankful for the opportunity and for the invitation to be speaking in front of this Joint Session of Congress. I am grateful to be able to speak to, not only the men and women who make final changes, but to the public who have made the decision to listen in and inform themselves on public matters. It has come to my attention that many have put aside the dangers currently occurring with the youth of America. As a whole, many have decided to ignore the many building blocks that build our children to become wonderful men and women. These “building blocks” are now tumbling down and missing pieces.

On the steps of the Capitol Building, a snowy January day in 1961, one of the most memorable speeches in United States history was given. Kennedy’s main argument was that everyone and anyone can make a difference, and we need to all work together in turning America in the right direction for years to come. The address started with Kennedy's cry to Americans to rise up to greatness so they can reach their maximum potential, not only as individuals, but together as a nation. It was the spring of 2012 when my plane landed on JFK Airport in New York, USA. The chilly breeze of April whispered “Welcome to America” into my ears. The moment that I felt my feet were not touching the ground of the Philippines anymore, made me think of what’s ahead of me: Will things be a lot better transitioning from my country to another? Barack Obama’s win for President in 2009 was a historical moment for the United States. His inaugural speech was much anticipated, because this was going to set the tone for his presidency. His message addressed a couple of specific points like his gratefulness to the American people, the different crises America is facing, how America will overcome these crises, replying to his cynics, addressing the world, and then he reminded America again to be brave like they’ve always been to overcome the hard times (5 Speechwriting Lessons from Obama's Inaugural Speech, (n.d.).

I stumbled into the auditorium later that afternoon, bleary-eyed and exhausted, and slurred my way through the speech. Needless to say, I lost tragically, and my dreams of becoming the next Barack Obama were temporarily shattered. However, I didn’t let this first loss slow me down.
We have proven we can overcome great challenges before, and I know we will again. This is our future, to make the America we all believe in. We will continue the dream of safety and strength, of freedom and prosperity and create a world that each and every one of us can live in. I hope that we can all come to see this one day, that despite its flaws, despite its mistakes, despite some of its people, our country is a beautiful place. Around the world, people are being denied freedoms, they are being denied clean air, they are being denied life.
