Everything is Dark and Unknowable It starts with a baseball game, a flying baseball and a nearly blinded eye. That is how The Chosen by Chaim Potok starts. Throughout his wonderful book there are many themes that are tied through the book, Religion, Friendship, but most important of all is the theme of the eye. From literally seeing to the figurative eye, Potok ties the eye wonderfully throughout the entire book, making it a wonderful book to read from young to old.
Intellectual development is how one learns, the seven IQ’s. The seven IQ’s are, words smart, number smart, picture smart, body smart, sound and rhythm smart, people smart and self smart. Out of the seven IQ’s I believe Simon is word smart, people smart and self smart. I think he is these smarts because of the following example in the movie.
I decided to read The Chosen by Chaim Potok because it is set during the 1940’s and about a culture that I do not have much experience with. This first person novel is narrated by Reuven Malther who lives in Brooklyn and forms an unlikely friendship with a boy named Danny Saunders. Reuven is a secular Jew with a very intellectual father, while Danny is the heir to a Hasidic rebbe position. The Chosen walks readers through the life of these two boys during their adolescence and also through a crisis of faith when the stories of what happened during the war begin to be told in America. During a very pivotal part of the book when the country finds out that President Roosevelt is dead and Reuven says, “Reb Saunders said it was God’s will”(Potok
In Chaim Potok’s novel, The Chosen, Reb Saunders, who is Danny’s father, is a very interesting and wise man. His techniques and beliefs for raising his son is strange and unorthodox but it is what he believes will help grow his son’s soul. He is not your typical father and being Jewish plays a role in his decisions. In the book we see how his actions are used and end with fruitful results. Reb Saunders grew up in a “small town in southern Russia” and was raised in the Jewish Orthodox customs.
Many amazing and well fleshed out characters are in The Chosen by Chaim Potok. One of the most prominent and important characters is Danny Saunders. When Danny is introduced he is made out to be arrogant, mean-spirited, and an elitist. However, when Reuven talks to him he realizes that he is actually just a brilliant, inquisitive, and shelter kid. Danny’s most prominent trait is his brilliance.
He was born a brilliant boy and carried that attitude through his life. Mr. Malter compared his brilliancy to a wise Hassidic man saying, “Reb Saunders’ son has a mind like
The Importance of Respect In Chaim Potok’s The Chosen, Reuven Malter, Danny, and Reb Saunders are three distinct characters that display their amazing, God-given characteristic of respect towards not only their family but also close friends. “Show respect even to those who don’t deserve it; not as a reflection of their character, but as a reflection of yours.” (Dave Willis) Derived from this quote is a good challenger and motivator to people of all religions to show respect and gratitude towards people who might not even deserve it.
Every life decision that we make reveals part of our character. If we decide to make corrupt decisions, then we most likely have an unethical personality. In the book The Chosen, Chaim Potok uses Danny Saunders to show that dangerous decisions reveal morbid personalities. The decisions he makes as a great baseball player and intelligent Jew, reflect his violent and rebellious personality. With this, his lonely side will also be discovered.
Concerning Characters Concern ranks in the top of characteristics for a true friend to have. People with this quality care more for others. The Bible says “That there should be no schism in the body: but that the members should have the same care one for another. ”(1 Corinthians 12:25).
Importance of Wisdom In Chaim Potok’s The Chosen, many characters display their wisdom, especially Reb Saunders, Mr. Malter, and Mr. Galanter. Reb Saunders, Danny’s father, shows great wisdom when he must react to other people’s opinions and views. Mr. Malter, who has the same job and position as Reb Saunders but studies a different view of the religion, displays the same kind of wisdom towards other religions or beliefs contradictory to his. Mr. Galanter, the baseball coach of Mr. Malter’s son, Reuven, makes wise choices in directing and encouraging his team to work hard and play well.
What do you think it means to be intelligent? Being intelligent means having self-awareness and understanding, using logic and critical thinking, and having the ability to learn. This is shown in the novel by Delia Owens, Where the Crawdads Sing, John Stienbecks novella, Of Mice and Men, and Richard Connell’s fictional short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”. In the book Where the Crawdads Sing, Kya uses her intelligence all throughout her life to survive on her own in the marsh.
Intelligence is what gets us by everyday; it gets us jobs and helps to provide for ourselves and others. I'm not saying you need to be the smartest person ever to be successful, but you at least have to be smart enough. Gladwell mentions that "Langan’s IQ is 30 percent higher than Einstein’s. But that doesn’t mean Langan is 30 percent smarter than Einstein. That’s ridiculous.
The definition of intelligence is someone who is able to use their knowledge for the good to help them. Charles has a great ability and uses that to advance him in their journey to find their father. That is where the intelligence and wisdom theme ties
I took the quiz on relativism and learned some things about myself. Question number 2: What is morally right or wrong is relative to the situation. My answer to that question was yes. I agreed with moral relativism (Chaffee, 2013). I believe if you have an abortion for medical reasons it is okay.
WHAT IS INTELLIGENCE? There has been many debates as well as
