Shakespeare was a famous playwright who wrote plays such as Hamlet, The Tempest, and Romeo and Juliet, all of which involve tragedies. In the play Romeo and Juliet, the tragedy forms as the two main characters fall in love with each other. Yet, their relationship is not that straightforward, as Romeo and Juliet cannot see each other or be together. Their separation emerges from the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. In addition to the conflict between the Montagues and the Capulets, conflicts exist within each of the families. In the Capulet family, Lord Capulet and Juliet have an argument with each other over who Juliet should marry. This simple dispute between Juliet and Lord Capulet creates an internal conflict in Juliet and causes the Nurse and Lady Capulet to abandon her. This results in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because when Juliet asks Friar Lawrence for help, he formulates a complicated plan in which there are multiple aspects that can fail. He gives Juliet a potion that allows her to “appear like death,” and then tells Juliet that “In the meantime ... Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift” (IV, i, 105 & 115-116). Juliet frets over errors that may occur during the entire process of the plan, worrying that she will “wake before the time that Romeo/ Come to redeem [her]” (IV, iii, 32-33). This also adds to the internal conflict in Juliet, but at this point, she has no other option to turn to. Therefore, the conflict between Lord Capulet and Juliet is the main cause of Romeo and Juliet’s deaths in the play because it causes Juliet to find Friar Lawrence for a solution to her troubles, leading to the deaths of Romeo and
