Like the narrator in the story, I also made a decision that I have regretted. The narrator made a decision that he regretted. He let the bass go and chose Sheila instead. The narrator cut the line with a pen light. He was nearing shore and needed to make a decision. When he made it to shore, the bass would be gone. One reason why he did this because Shiela did not like fishing. Even though he loved fishing, he agreed with her because he liked her. The narrator was willing to give everything not to look dumb in front of her. He didn’t want to also freak her out by pulling a big bass out of the water. He would then have bad reputation. If he chose the girl, he would have a chance with a hot chick and maybe go on another date. Another reason why he let the bass go was that he didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of Sheila. He tried to hide his fishing equipment when she wasn’t looking because he agreed with her. Consequently, in moving the rod, he accidentally hooked on a big bass. It made a buzzing sound in which the narrator dismissed it as being bats. Also, the author was foreshadowing when he moved the rod. The narrator was then was embarrassed when the canoe went backwards. The fish was pulling the canoe backwards because it was huge and strong. Then Sheila asked him why they were going backwards. He lied to her saying it was the current. Then the narrator cut the line. He regrets this action because it would have been the biggest bass he had ever caught before. After he got to shore, Sheila dumped him. She said that she would not be going home with him, instead, she would be going home with a college student. The narrator says there were many other Sheila Mants but there was only one big bass.
