Change is one of the most important aspects of effective management. Managers that have honed skills in the change process are progressive employees that organizations need to stay competitive with the merging global and local markets.
Change is not a single event, it is a process. The process of moving from the present state to a desired state that individuals, groups and organizations undertake in response to dynamic internal and external factors that change the current reality.
The healthcare environment is currently up against many opportunities for change. These changes are perpetuated by internal and external for factors and come at unknowing intervals. The health care industry falls under the “white water rapids” metaphor, “organization is seen as a small raft navigating a raging river with uninterrupted white-water rapids.” (Robbins, De Cenzo, & Coulter, 2015, p. 227). External environment is “factors, forces, situations, and events outside the organization that affect its performance” (Robbins, et al., 2015, p. 140). The healthcare industry receives external change factors from multiple governmental entities that impose changes to policies and procedures, creating internal organizational change.
