Carr reflects on the negative impacts that Google and the web have on how we interact with the world and each other. Carr (2008) feels that he is losing the ability to control his own mind, due to the time he spends online. He believes the reason this is happening to him is that the Internet has become a "universal medium for him." Carr believes that he is moving away from being a deep-thinking person to an individual who may be certainly distracted and always searching for other things to do. Everything has been made easier because of technology, which reduces the amount of energy and time people spend on thinking.

Thompson believes that advanced technology is making humans smarter, better linked, and deeper thinkers, both as individuals and as a society. He also looks at the effect advanced tools have on the way we think and the way we solve problems. Thompson’s (2013) point is that “artificial intelligence” is not usually as powerful as “intelligence amplification.” Humans are using technology to be smarter and are supporting themselves to be better informed. Search engines like Google answer our most ambiguous questions; updates make us focus more on the human beings that surround us. This modification to how we gather information is shifting through each part of our notion. It changes how we analyze, how we remember things, and the way we respond to knowledge, both emotionally and intellectually. Carr believes that technology is destroying our brains and the way we think. Technology automatically takes us down a certain path, which is not allowing individuals to use their brains and rely on technology to get all the data they need. People do not take the time to think first before using technology. Carr believes that the advancement of technology is critical, not always the most critical part of technology, but the message one receives/understands from it. Thompson on the other hand states the logical conclusion that the Internet does make people think differently. He accepts the truth that technology is positive.
