The H.U.R.I.E.R model is essential to the effective listening process and it requires an individual to practice the simple of steps Hearing, Understanding, Remembering, Interpreting, Evaluating, Responding in order to understand and process a complete thought through listening. In this paper I will be mainly focusing on the last three components of the H.U.R.I.E.R which is Interpreting, Evaluating, and Responding. As people, whether we believe it or not we use all of these aspects subconsciously in our everyday lives as it regards to listening. This aspect is extremely critical in the listening process because it helps you to better identify the positives and the negatives but most importantly expose the hidden content of a message. My mother always told me, when it comes to communication and listening in general “There is intent behind the content” and behind the content is the true intent. That is why evaluating a speaker or any piece of information is important so that you can find those intentions behind the message. For example, Dr.Michael Eric Dyson is a prominent speaker, a sociology professor at Georgetown University, and a New York Times author. Now he has many credentials and accolades that make him and his work credible. He came and spoke at our schools during Martin Luther King weekend to give his “State of A Dream Address” and throughout the speech he stated some really factual and relevant information that made to be very trustworthy and factual because of his credentials. As it regards to his intentions behind his message it was to give us American people a sense of empowerment in a real, raw relevant way. And from evaluating his message you could tell that he was really passionate about what he was speaking on as it regards to us continuing to the life out the dream and legacy of the late Dr.Martin Luther King. Alos, throughout his speech, I as the listener was able to evaluate effectively by identifying the positives and negatives of his speech
