Interview Essay: A Career As A Coach

Cashing in early, Saturday, February 10th 2017 I began shooting around as I do every Saturday morning. My dad and I were working on my shooting mechanics when noticed many of the tips he was giving me we the same ones my coach would give me in practice. That’s when I started to ponder the definition of a coach and things that make a coach, how a coach is supposed to be, and just an understanding of what a coach was. After just another day at the gym, I then quickly proceeded to get in contact with my teammates, coaches, family, friends, and any individual I knew that played a sport at some period in their life. Sending out endless texts, I requested that everyone send me their definition of a coach. After debating with my dad and collecting responses to come up with a universal definition to represent a coach, I figured how better to define something than with that thing itself.
That night I had the chance to interview my former high school head coach, Hough West, who would be inducted into my High School’s Basketball hall of fame for recording 500 wins as a head coach after a win that night. For coaches, we are teachers, leaders, and most importantly role models to their teams (kids), the influence they have a mentor has an everlasting effect. For myself, and staff we must be and provide the things we want out of you guys. If we want, you to be successful it’s our job to provide you with the skills and knowledge to be that. As a coach, I must be a role model and a help in any manner I can. Whether it’s be there as a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd parent, tutor, or even just an advisor, I must be that. I have to be whatever it takes to prepare my kids to be the best they can
