Co-Teaching Interview Write up
In conducting my co-teaching interviews, I gained a lot of insight into what I should expect when and if I’m ever put in a position where I must be a part of a co-teaching team. I decided to conduct the interviews with the co-teaching team individually because I felt I would be able to get a more honest and direct response/information from each of the teachers. The co-teaching team I decided to interview consists of a second-grade general education teacher and a special education teacher. The class that they teach is one of the two LRE rooms for second grade. I chose to interview this co-teaching team because they are in my opinion a very successful and strong team. Overall, many of these subjects resulted in similar answers for the most important topics. The team’s teaching model and division of the classroom responsibilities were designed by Mrs. Jones. She had planned the co-teaching model prior to meeting with Mrs. Smith. Upon review, Mrs. Smith agreed that the plan was good and that it would work well. They each knew their responsibilities and communicated with each other weekly at grade-level meetings or as things needed to be adjusted. They both agreed that an open line of communication and a willingness to listen to each other’s ideas or suggestions was important to their co-teaching success. Mrs. Jones pointed out that time management was one of the things that they disagreed about, and Mrs. Smith stated that they disagreed on the temperature of the classroom. To resolve these disagreements, they communicated with each other to find an appropriate solution. Mrs. Jones created a cheat sheet for Mrs. Smith to assist with time management, and Mrs. Smith communicated how uncomfortable the room temperature was during hot days. They worked out these issues through effective communication, which they both agreed was necessary for success. Mrs. Jones stated that keeping a team calendar was a necessity for co-teaching communication. Mrs. Smith conveyed that it was also important for them to remember that they both had the same goals and that they were there to support each other. They were also in agreement on how to handle disagreements. It is important that any disagreement or conflict of opinion is addressed immediately. As a team, you cannot allow issues to escalate because it not only affects your teaching relationship but also affects the student’s success.
