In Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer and The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, it is shown how negatively life-altering crossing physical and mental borders can be. He completely distances himself from modern society as he fulfills his dream of hitchhiking to Alaska. The Things They Carried tells the stories of American soldiers that are serving in the Vietnam War and shows the heavy toll that war takes on them. Both novels display the impacts of border crossing; including a blurred line of what is acceptable, an abuse of freedom, and isolation.

When this excerpt takes place, Buck has been "fastened with a harness" to "an arrangement of straps and buckles" so he could be trained to pull a dog sled. Buck had never pulled a dog sled before, yet he wisely chose to become a quick learner. Several factors lead to Buck 's success.
Chris McCandless from the book “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer is a character who is extremely well liked by all. His smarts give him the ability to hold conversations with a variety of different people. Chris does not use his knowledge in a negative way that causes people to think that he is arrogant, it just comes out of him naturally, leaving many people impressed by the young boy. Through his character, I learned how much intelligence can truly add to one's personality. Chris is subconsciously phenomenal at speaking with new people due to his wide range of knowledge.
Surviving Impossibilities Survival is the act of surviving and doing what is required to lived; sociology has a theory called “Social Darwinism.” Social Darwinism could be broken down to one phrase, survival of the fittest. The notion survival of the fittest implies that those who are successful were meant to be successful and those who are not successful were meant to be in the situation they are in, the key is adapt and survive. M.K. Asante Jr. did just that in his memoir Buck. Buck is about the life of an inner city Philadelphia young black male who faced many obstacles and this young boy was able to overcome his circumstances.
In the novel The Call of The Wild, by Jack London, Buck becomes feral due to his primitive instincts, retrogressing to earlier civilization, and the necessity of working in a pack to survive. His primitive instincts were a major role in his de-civilization. He had feelings that he wouldn’t have gotten in California. “Into The Wild” by Jon Krakauer is the story of Chris McCandless’s life and journey. In 1992, this young man, Chris, from an average family in the East Coast decided to cut off contact with his family and give up all his possessions so that he could hitchhike into the Alaskan bush. A main reason many believe Chris went into the wilderness was because he was in search of his identity. From reading this book I have come up with my own opinion of what type of person he was. The conclusion I have reached about Chris is that he was a distant and ill-prepared person who had a very strong will.
Nick Allen Mr. Reynolds English 11 7 June 2023 The Fame that was Deserved Was Chris’s decision to leave his family and go live in the wild a good decision? Some may say Chris was not smart for making this decision but, others argue that the decision was in his best interest to be happy and live the life he wants. To achieve his goal of happiness he wanted to venture into the wilderness of Alaska and live a life of self-reliance. There were many parts of the book that showed the reasons why Chris decided to leave his family and go into the wilderness. One reason is that Chris was searching for a sense of purpose that he was missing in his life.
World War II impacted the world greatly, and it brought many changes such as made countries fight against each other, and formed major alliances between countries. Most importantly World War II not only changed the world by creating new ways to destroy countries, using mass murders, invasions, deportations, and assassinations. It also dehumanized Jewish people, brought new advancements to the world, pushed technologies to it’s limits and it was the main reason for the creation of new vehicles and new weapons. It all began with the German Expansion across Europe. “Nazi Germany unleashed World War II with the intention of establishing, by military conquest, a permanent dominance over Europe respectively.”
As Jim Rohn once said, “It is not what happens that determines the major part of your future... it is what you do about what happens that counts.” Buck, the main character in the novel The Call of the Wild, is a victim of life 's many unexpected obstacles. From domesticated and tamed to wild and primitive, the transformation of Buck from beginning to end is a result of nature and nurture combined. Nature, his genetic makeup, proves to be the most dominant in his development of becoming a free creature of the wilderness.
