Commercials always have a message they are trying to get the audience to understand. Many commercials have the same message however they are intended for different audiences. The target of the commercials can be define by the elements used in the commercials. Every detail provided by the producers is used to achieve the overall goal. Such details include the actors in the commercial, the setting, the music if provided, the narrator, and the colors to name a few. The Bank of America commercial “Portraits” and the Citibank “Into the Wild” commercial are both targeting audiences that they believe could be potential clients. The commercial begins with an elderly couple sitting in front of the camera, in their living room, it is an older household with dark, worn out furniture in it. There is a family party going on in the background with kids running around and adults drinking champagne. The entire family sits down to take a picture including the grandchildren and the children. In the background, there is a “Happy 50th Anniversary” sign in the background. This most likely represents the couple’s 50th wedding anniversary. The scene changes to winter season, and a person, most likely one of their children, enters the house while the couple listens to their daughter argue with her husband in a different room. The scene quickly changes once again and the family gathers around the couch to take a picture, the family looks younger and there is only one grandchildren in the picture. In the background, there are Christmas lights in the background indicating that it is also during the holiday season. There is a range in age from children to adults, and the elderly couple who are at the center of every scene played. As the commercial projects, there is a change in the age and the amount of family members. There is a flashback and the number of people shortens and they get younger in age. This flashback continues until the elderly couple are shown as being young with only one child. In the commercial the family at some point gathers around the couch, which seems to be the same throughout, and captures the time period the family is going through. Even though the styles change and family members look different the home remains constant in every picture, with the major change not being the objects surrounding the families but rather the family members themselves. The constant change of scene and people is made to demonstrate that although families are constantly changing, a bank such as Bank of America will be able to provide the financial aid needed in different aspects of the individuals lives over time. The commercial is made to create a connection with other families who are in search of a bank who can provided them with great service regardless of the changes revolving the family of the time they live
