Intolerance and oppression have confronted humans as far as history has been recorded. It dates back as far as 18500 BC. Jews, homosexuals, muslims, gypsies, women, prisoners of war, disabled, Africans, these and more religious and ethnic have been suppressed one time or another throughout history. By examining history, all the horrendous acts of intolerance against humans shows all the areas of oppression still active today and the pattern of methods used to oppress people. The Israelites in Egypt forced to be slaves is one of the oldest examples of oppression we have today. There is debate of how long the Israelites were in Egypt. The Bible states that it was 400 years “Then the Lord said to Abram, ‘Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for 400 years,’” but some scholars say information shows the Israelites were only enslaved for 215 years. The Israelites were held without their consent in Egypt as slaves for a matter of time. The Hebrews first went to Egypt for shelter and safety, it was after years of living in the country that they were forced to become slaves. They were forced to do hard labor which was both physically and mentally taxing. In addition, India’s untouchables or Haijan (children of God) dates back as far as 18500 BC, when the caste system was introduced.
