Irena Sendler
Irena won two awards after the Holocaust, she was a nominee and did not win. Irena was a social worker to help kids to help them get food or go back to their families. She had saved 2,500 children in all some got to see their families, and some didn't get to after the war.
Irena’s life was normal before the Holocaust. Irena was born as Irena Krzyżanowska. She was born February 15, 1910, in Otwock, Poland. Her parents were members of the Polish Socialist Party ( Biography.com) . Later on her in her childhood father died of Typhus when she was just a child. Just a few years before the Holocaust she got married to her first husband named Mieczyslaw Sendler and later divorced ( Biography.com). When Hitler got chancellor he wanted the Jews to die because he thought they were the cause of them losing the first World War.

Irena and some others smuggled children out of the ghetto she used caskets, potato sacks, ambulances and some even snuck out of the underground tunnels(Jewish Virtual Library). She gave back most of the children to their parents but some of the parents didn't survive during the war. She and her colleagues saved some 2,500 kids. The Nazis arrested Sendler and they asked her for the children's names and she did not answer so she was sentenced to death at Pawiak Prison. Before the Nazi police could kill her, some Zegota members bribed the prison to let her out which they did(Biography.com).
