While Vladka Meed was in Germany there was a tragic event where the Nazis would capture Jews then send them to camps and there at the camps they would murder the Jews in gas chambers or of hunger. Vladka spent her days transporting Jewish children and smuggling weapons out of the ghetto where she was held. Vladka Meed had done some very risky things that is why they label her as an upstander.
Before the war Vladka Meeds childhood was quite ordinary, all until one day she was transported and held at the Warsaw ghetto. Vladka Meed was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1922. Vladka Meed was just a code name for her, Vladkas real name was Feigel Petel. Although Vladka was Jewish she did not look Jewish at all. Since Vladka had blue eyes, light hair, and a small nose she actually looked polish. Since Vladka looked polish she snuck out of the Warsaw ghetto to smuggle weapons. Her looks also helped her help other Jewish children get transported out of the Warsaw ghetto.

Vladka Meed did her work underground. An underground courier is a person who works underground instead of working where everyone else could see what you were working on. Vladka and her sister were the only ones left in her family alive. In 1940 Vladkas father died of hunger. Vladkas brother and mother were captured and transported to a different concentration camp where they were murder in a gas chamber in 1943, while Vladka and her sister were the only ones left behind. While Vladka was left behind she helped other people get away. While Vladka was transporting Jewish children her sister was captured and transported then murdered in
