Is Batman A Vigilante?

My take on whether Batman is a vigilante or a villain is that he's a Vigilante. For one of many reasons that he is willing to lose his life just to save another person's. An act of kindness that not many vigilantes would take upon themselves like Batman does. Making him a hero even though there is doubt within his intentions for his actions. Although that is a possibility. It seems as though his actions definitely contradict that thought for that matter. “His ability to inspire great fear (“Bruce Wayne”) Therefore if you mess with Batman “ you are likely to end up dead”(Batman and the rule of law, pg.2).

Likewise making him the ‘Un Averagely ” hero that lets people go after they commit a crime. But instead gives them a taste of their own medicine. To try and get them to not go back to breaking the law. Not something typically done from most Vigilantes. Since instead of letting people go they choose to torture the heck out of them. Also breaks too many laws himself making him a vigilante most of all.
