In the poem, Beowulf follows the adventures of the hero described in Campbell's monomyth. In order to be acknowledged as an epic, a story must have many stages, according to the monomyth format. The hero’s journey consists of three main stages. These stages are separation, initiation, and return. And ofcourse, Beowulf encounters each one of these stages
What do you consider a hero? Many people have different ways of seeing someone as a hero, such as what they do or what they look like. Does Beowulf really qualify as a mythic hero according to Joseph campbell’s “ The Hero with a Thousand Faces”? Yes, Beowulf does qualify as a mythic hero for many reasons.
Beowulf: Epic Hero or Proud Fool? So what exactly is a hero? A hero to most is a person idealized for their courage and their outstanding achievements and qualities. Some may even consider Beowulf a hero due his never backing down and risking his own life for the safety of his people.
In the epic Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf is depicted as a heroic figure who fights monsters and defends the weak. During its time, Beowulf would be considered a great hero, however in today 's standards Beowulf would only be considered a great warrior. That’s because a hero should value the lives of the people and not seek to be rewarded. Instead, Beowulf committed heroic acts for his own selfish reasons and never shows to values the lives of the people. From fighting Grendel to slaying the dragon, Beowulf only fought because he value the fame and fortune that comes along with those accomplishments.
I have encountered beowolf’s epic poem back when I was in high school. It was about a hero of the Geats. That’s all I can remember. In the movie, it shows how men struggle from fame, honour, brotherhood, loyalty, and promiscuity that are passed on from generation to generation.
Society may get to decide a hero’s place in society, but Society doesn’t get to decide who is a hero or is not. In the story of Beowulf, Beowulf was very popular in society as a legend. Yet in my life, my Mom is legendary to me and is just as big of a hero. In Beowulf, heroes were worshipped for fighting monsters, being brave, loyal, and having superhuman strength.
In today’s modern society, there are many cases in which a person or “actor” is portrayed to be the “perfect hero.” For example, heroes like Batman or Superman are shown to the public to be “indestructible” and “undefeatable” against evil villians. Similarly, in the poem Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf is portrayed to be “the perfect hero.” The author illustrates to the reader of Beowulf’s achievements by using vivid imagery, juxtaposition, and strong diction. These techniques help readers understand the importance of Beowulf’s significant and necessary acts at the beginning as well as at the end of the story.
Every culture from the beginning of recorded history to the present has told tales of heroes accomplishing great deeds to the amazement of all. Heroes exist in a variety of mediums from literature to modern cinematic features. Heroic tales permeate throughout modern society in every form of entertainment. Modern man can relate to the figure of the hero as they symbolize how life lessons may be learned.

A hero is classified as a person who is admired for their bravery, achievements, or nobility. Although Beowulf displays all these qualities, there are several reasons he is not a hero, mainly him being egotistical and arrogant. This is why Beowulf is not a heroic person. Throughout history, there are great men and women who proved to be heroes through their actions. The actions that made one a hero varied depending on the time and place; in one society, great warriors were heroes, and in another, clever leaders. However, the qualities of a hero are unchanging, no matter what actions he/she performs. In order to be a true hero, the qualities one must possess are the willingness to persevere, courage, and selflessness. Beowulf demonstrates these qualities many times throughout the poem proving that he is a true hero.

Grendel was like the people who invaded the Anglo-Saxons. Beowulf came to help people in need from monsters. The Anglo-Saxons protected and fought for their people, like in the story Beowulf protected his people, Beowulf in the story said “lord of all life has never watched me wash my sword in blood born of my own family.”
Various amounts of actions and words make a man more than just any being. A man more than himself has to be something bigger than life. That detail makes a hero, that detail makes a man more. In the eyes of children, and the public, a strong warrior must have heart. With this characteristic he can lift a mountain for anyone or thing in need.
A hero does not fight for fame and glory but for the greater good. A hero is someone who goes through adversity to help others in desperate times. A hero fights evil, and defends people. Beowulf should be considered a hero because he is a strong, brave warrior who defended his people and slayed evil monsters. Beowulf proves himself to be a strong, brave warrior by killing Grendel the monster.
