“Is College Worth It?” is a study conducted by Pew Research Center regarding the issues surrounding higher education in today’s society. This study showed that majority of Americans do not believe that they get a good education for its price, only 19% of 1,055 school presidents think that our education system is best in the world and 4 of 10 believes that our system is heading the wrong direction. Director of Pew Social and Demographics Trend project Paul Taylor said that this started the rethinking about higher education. Director Taylor mentioned that they have noticed trends in higher education: a record number of young adults enrolled in college, the highest cost of education and increasing student loan debt burden. However, majority of the presidents felt that the U.S. education system is heading the right direction. Additionally, presidents said that high schools are doing poorly on preparing students for college and college students study less than they did 10 years ago. 64% of the presidents said that it is unlikely that the country will reach President Obama’s goal of having the highest percentage of degree and certificate holder of young adults in the world by 2020. The study tried to discover other factors in student selection. Most school believes that race should be at least a minor factor and special skills be a major one; a big majority of two-year colleges and for profit school that race should not be a factor at all. For the mission of their schools, presidents of for-profit schools are focusing students for work and the rest for intellectual growth.
