Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer, navigator, and colonizer who is well known for “discovering” North America. In reality Christopher was trying to get to China and thought he was in Japan all 4 times he went to North America. He was actually in what is now the Bahamas and Cuba. And really Christopher didn't even discover America. The Native Americans beat Columbus by thousands of years.
Imagine a young boy ambitious not to let down his family, like his father did, but to be a hero. A boy determined to not make the same mistakes as his father. Now imagine this boy as a man not only letting down his family, but the entire country of America. This man was Benedict Arnold, who was an American General and who became a traitor during the American revolution. Two marriages, a need for money, and a sad childhood weighed down Benedict causing him to make possibly the worst decision of his life, turning to the British side during the war.
To be considered a hero a person must do a courageous act or multiple acts for the purpose of helping another. In the story “Anthem” by Ayn Rand our main character, Equality 7-2521 would be considered a hero because of his actions and the journey he goes on. In the story he wants to bring the people his invention the light bulb. Even though they reject it he still takes a huge risk to try and change the city for the better. Another example would be by the end of the book equality has figured out the true evil of the earth and he seeks to bring it down.
Matthew Perna Mrs. Smith Social Studies 21 April, 2016 What changes a military hero from a great patriot to a traitor? Benedict Arnold is the only man in history to be a military hero for both sides. He is known to many in our country as a traitor. His passion for defeating the enemy in the end was what defeated him. The Saratoga campaign was a series of battles fought during the months of June through October in 1777 in New York.
In the United States today, the name Benedict Arnold is a known synonym for “traitor.” During most of the war, he impressed both the British and the Americans with his skills and strengths. He was once a Patriot, but he is now known as one of the most cowardly traitors of America. He won many significant battles for the Americans, but that does not mean that he is a hero. He turned to the British for his own selfish reasons and his actions were unfair to the American people.
Due to Charles Lindbergh’s accomplishments during the 1920s, such as traveling across the Atlantic Ocean. He brought hope and courage to people throughout the United States, he well deserves the title as the “Person of the Decade”. Lindbergh was one of the first heroes that Americans believed in because he demonstrated a key factor during the 1920s which were change. World War I had recently ended which meant things could go back to normal. He also influenced the idea of modernity by flying by himself multiple times to places people wouldn’t ever dare to travel.
Do you think Benedict Arnold is a hero or a traitor?Benedict Arnold is both hero and traitor. He betrayed the patriots to join the british. He was a hero because he helped the patriots win one of the battles. The patriots were happy with him because he helped them. Then he betrayed the patriots to join the british and so the patriots got mad at him.
For example, Edward Snowden exposed the National Security Agency for eavesdropping on Americans and people around the world, despite the possibility of being arrested and charged with heavy crimes. " So, what did the leaks tell us? First, they confirmed that the U.S. government, without obtaining any court warrants, routinely collects the phone logs of tens of millions, perhaps hundreds of millions, of Americans, who have no links to terrorism whatsoever,"(Source 3). The question is who is truly at fault? The government for doing that or Snowden for ratting them out to the public about
As Mr. Cusick stated, what Edward Snowden failed to disclose or fail to see was the whole picture. He was not privileged to see how some aspects of information fit with others. With or without this understanding, Snowden painted a grim picture of NSA’s practices regarding the privacy millions of citizens. By doing so, he severely damaged the nations intelligence gathering capability and put the lives of many at
In this essay, I’ll be telling you my opinion on whether Andrew Carnegie was a hero or not. Andrew Carnegie, known as the king of steel, grew up poor, but became one of the richest and most successful business owner during the 1800s and 1900s. Much of the world regarded Carnegie as the most famous living American during his time. Andrew Carnegie was not a hero because he showed off his money, treated his workers poorly, and was selfish. First of all, Andrew Carnegie flashes his wealth.
Napoleon Bonaparte is a controversial figure in history, while some argue that he was a tyrant, others would say that he was a saviour of the French people, and a spreader of secular values. Regardless of one’s opinion, we mustn't neglect the many accomplishments he achieved throughout his reign as Emperor of France. As a young man, Napoleon joined a military academy, where he grew fascinated by famous figures like Julius Caesar, Hannibal Barca, and especially Alexander the Great. With the eruption of the French Revolution, Napoleon was quickly able to rise up through the ranks, eventually leading the French people to a victory over the monarchy, and later, the tyrants of the Reign of Terror. During his reign, he maintained his belief in the ideals of the revolution, which form the current national motto
Snowden was committed to doing the right thing so he revealed the different spying operations that were going on within the N.S.A. He became a whistleblower who rescued American citizens from being monitored through illegal surveillance and was looked upon as a
“At least 42 terrorist attacks aimed at the United States have been thwarted since 9/11” (Reality). The majority of people know about the tragedy that happened on September 11th, 2001, but not that many people know about what came to be after the event; the Patriot Act. This act is the “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001” (Miller). The Patriot Act got put in place by the President and almost got a unanimous vote to pass it nearly ten days after. It was later used to take down many of the 42 attack plots.
During the Middle Ages, the Christian Church was all-powerful, teaching that life on earth was short and sorrowful, that human beings were sinful creatures at the mercy of God’s judgment, and that this life was just preparation for life after death. In the Renaissance, these ideas were not exactly denied, but they were not believed with any real certainty. The Renaissance adopted a secular (worldly) idea of life called humanism, and emphasized individualism. Humanists studied the classics (Greece and Rome) in order to better understand man and his abilities.
The main issue in the Snowden controversy is the conflicting rights of private individuals and the US government with regard to the use of telecommunications and the internet. There are ethical issues surrounding this controversy and the most applicable ethical approach for this case is “Ethics by Rights Approach”. As a background, the reason why US government had declared Edward Snowden a traitor is his involvement in the leaking of about 1.7 million confidential US documents, 15,000 Australian intelligence files and 58,000 British intelligence files from the National Security Agency (or NSA) to the public. These confidential information were acquired by the NSA through the PRISM program by collaborating with big internet companies such
