Edwin Sutherland a Sociologist was the first to use the term white-collar crime in a speech he gave to the American Sociological Society in Philadelphia. “In 1939 Sutherland invented the idea of white-collar crime as a way to expand the concept of criminality beyond that era’s focus on illegal acts among immigrants and the working poor and apply it to the powerful” (dail.jotsr.org). Sutherland was drawn to this topic in his search for a general theory of crime. Sutherland’s goal was to draw attention to the fact that people commit crimes from all social classes.
