Edwin Sutherland a Sociologist was the first to use the term white-collar crime in a speech he gave to the American Sociological Society in Philadelphia. “In 1939 Sutherland invented the idea of white-collar crime as a way to expand the concept of criminality beyond that era’s focus on illegal acts among immigrants and the working poor and apply it to the powerful” (dail.jotsr.org).
