Homework, homework, homework. Homework causes hours of stress in young students’ lives. Homework should be lessened in high school and banned in grades below because it causes has an astronomical amount of cons compared to the pros. Homework will cause countless long-term complications and has numerous short-term struggles to go along with the buildup of stress that slowly gets enormous as the year advances. Homework can review previous content; on the other hand, it will cause more issues for the developing student than the review can help them learn content that they will soon forget in a couple days. Studies that do research on homework frequently end after a few days, but the longer the study, then the more it proves that homework is less helpful. In Kohn’s article, “The Truth About Homework”, he describes homework as tedious, and the myth about homework and how it teaches the students any non-academic achievements like self-discipline, and independence is false. The majority of people think homework will teach the student academically, and non-academically because it should teach them self-discipline, and independence, but the thought is a myth. Kohn later writes how homework and higher test scores have a correlation, but the correlation is generally inconsiderably small, and disappears once further, more sophisticated studies are done. Also, there’s no evidence that homework provides any academic benefit (“Truth”). Homework does have a correlation with higher test scores, but the miniature correlation will disappear quickly, leaving the disadvantages for the student to remain and ruin the rest of their week. Homework takes up unneeded time in which students could be sleeping instead. Kurt Kumler spoke about sleep within Anne-Sophie Kim’s article,“Lack of Sleep Hurts Student Health”, and said, “during certain stages of sleep, our brains are purging certain byproducts of the brain using energy during the day, like cleaning out the clogged pipes,” he later addressed, the lack of sleep gives students “a harder time remembering things we learned the day before, leaving us not as well equipped to solve complicated problems,” (Kim). Sleep is what helps students remember the previous content that they learned earlier in the day, and homework can cause a lack of sleep which leads to the student forgetting the previously learned content. Sleep will make learning easier. Kim later recorded, “Lack of sleep can upset one’s alertness, concentration, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. Sleep also plays a key role in consolidating memories,” (Kim). Sleep is crucial in helping the student operate well at school. It will help with concentration, and other skills needed to succeed in school at any level. In a study done in 2009 focused on students at Carnegie Mellon, Kim indicated that seventy-two percent of the students in the study reported that they did poorly on a test due to inadequate sleep (Kim).
